Get Address, PIN and DIGIPINWhy people search “what is my address”
Every day, millions of Indians type what is my address, postal address of my location, or my location address into Google. The reason is simple: official forms, apps, and delivery services all ask for a structured postal address, but many people are unsure how to write theirs correctly.
You might need your address when opening a bank account, updating Aadhaar, applying for a passport or driving licence, registering a business on GST, filling a job application, or ordering food and groceries online. In each case, the form expects fields like house or flat number, street or locality, city, district, state, and a 6-digit PIN code. If you recently moved, live in a new housing society, or grew up in a village without named streets, assembling that string can be frustrating.
GPS on your smartphone solves part of the problem. Your phone knows where you are standing within a few metres. Reverse geocoding turns those coordinates into a human-readable address using map databases. Our free tool at whatismydigipin.in goes further: it shows your full postal address, your area 6-digit PIN code, your DIGIPIN digital address, latitude and longitude, a map, and one-tap copy buttons so you can paste into any form or WhatsApp chat.
Postal address vs digital address in India
A postal address is the traditional way India Post and most government systems describe where you live. It usually includes a house or plot identifier, a street or village name, a locality or post office name, city or town, district, state, and PIN code. This format has worked for decades for letters and official correspondence.
A digital address is newer. India Post, with partners including IIT Hyderabad, NRSC, and ISRO, developed DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) as part of the National Addressing Grid. DIGIPIN assigns a unique 10-character code to every roughly 4 by 4 metre cell across India. It does not replace your postal address, but it adds a precise GPS layer that delivery apps, emergency services, and navigation tools can use when street names are missing or ambiguous.
When you search “what is my address,” you may actually need one or more of these: readable text for a form, a PIN code for sorting mail, or a DIGIPIN for pinpoint delivery. Our homepage tool returns all three at once so you do not have to visit multiple websites. Read more in our DIGIPIN vs PIN Code comparison or the blog article What is my address in India?
What you get from our address finder
When you tap Get my DIGIPIN on our homepage, the results table shows everything in one place:
- Full formatted postal address from reverse geocoding (locality, city, district, state)
- 6-digit India Post PIN code for your area, useful for forms labelled “Pincode”
- 10-character DIGIPIN for precise location sharing (about 4 metre grid accuracy)
- GPS latitude and longitude in decimal degrees for maps and records
- Interactive map preview so you can confirm the pin matches your building
- Copy buttons for each field and Share on WhatsApp for deliveries
If you only need the PIN code without the full guide, use our dedicated Find PIN Code tool or the landing page PIN code of my current location on phone.
How GPS address lookup works
Modern phones use a combination of GPS satellites, Wi-Fi positioning, and mobile tower triangulation to estimate your location. When you allow location access in the browser, JavaScript reads those coordinates (typically accurate to 5 to 20 metres outdoors, less indoors).
Reverse geocoding is the next step. Instead of turning an address into coordinates (forward geocoding), the system looks up your lat/lon in a geographic database and returns the nearest known address components. We use OpenStreetMap data via the Nominatim service, which covers villages, towns, and cities across India and is widely used in open mapping projects.
PIN code lookup uses the same coordinates to find the nearest postal code boundary in map data. PIN codes in India are assigned by India Post to post office delivery areas, not to individual buildings, so your PIN reflects your neighbourhood post office zone.
DIGIPIN encoding runs entirely in your browser using the official grid algorithm. Your latitude and longitude are converted into a permanent 10-character code. No personal name or phone number is embedded in DIGIPIN; it is purely a function of location. Learn the maths in our DIGIPIN algorithm guide.
All of this happens when you tap the button. We do not send your location to our servers for storage. Processing stays in your browser session. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Step-by-step: find my address on phone or laptop
- Open the tool. Visit whatismydigipin.in in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge. Mobile browsers work best for GPS.
- Tap Get my DIGIPIN. The button triggers a location request. Choose “Allow while using the site” or “Allow once.”
- Wait a few seconds. The status shows while GPS locks. Stand near a window or step outside if it takes long.
- Review the results table. Check that the map pin sits on or near your building. Read the address line for city, state, and locality.
- Add missing details manually. GPS cannot know your flat number, floor, block, or society name if it is not in the map database. Type those before copying.
- Copy what you need. Use the copy buttons for address, PIN, DIGIPIN, or coordinates. Paste into your form or delivery app.
- Share if needed. Tap Share on WhatsApp to send address, PIN, and DIGIPIN in one message. See how to share DIGIPIN.
On iPhone, ensure Location Services are on for Safari in Settings. On Android, enable GPS and set location mode to High accuracy. If you previously denied permission, clear the site permission in browser settings and reload the page.
Common use cases in India
Bank KYC and financial forms
Banks and payment apps require a proof-of-address style entry during KYC. Copy the geocoded address and PIN, then add your flat or house number and landmark. Match the state and PIN with your ID documents where possible.
Aadhaar, passport, and government portals
Online updates often ask for PIN code and address lines separately. Use our PIN row for the 6-digit field and the address row for locality and city. DIGIPIN is not yet mandatory on all forms but is accepted as supplementary location detail on some services.
E-commerce and food delivery
Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Amazon, and Flipkart struggle when customers enter vague addresses. Paste your full address plus DIGIPIN in delivery instructions so riders reach the correct gate or tower. Include tower block and flat number in the notes field.
Courier and logistics
Share both postal address and DIGIPIN with couriers. PIN code helps sorting at hubs; DIGIPIN helps last-mile navigation inside large campuses and industrial parks.
Real estate and property visits
Agents and buyers use GPS addresses to verify plot locations, especially on outskirts where street names are new. Coordinates and DIGIPIN reduce confusion for site visits.
Emergency services
Sharing accurate coordinates and address text helps ambulances and disaster response locate callers faster. DIGIPIN adds precision when street signs are absent.
Tips for accurate address results
- Stand outdoors or near an open window before tapping the button.
- Disable battery saver modes that restrict GPS on some Android phones.
- Wait 10 to 15 seconds for the first fix if you just enabled location.
- Compare the map pin with satellite view; drag is not supported, so walk closer if the pin is wrong.
- Retry after moving away from tall buildings that block satellite signals.
- Always add flat, floor, block, and landmark text that GPS cannot infer.
- For PIN-only needs, cross-check with our PIN finder if the first result seems off.
Reverse geocoding quality depends on OpenStreetMap coverage in your area. Urban centres usually have rich data; remote villages may show fewer street names. Community mappers continuously improve India coverage, so results improve over time.
Urban areas, rural villages, and new layouts
In metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune), you typically get detailed locality names, PIN codes, and recognizable map pins. Large apartment complexes may still need manual flat and tower details.
In rural and semi-urban areas, the address may show village, tehsil, and district names without a numbered street. That is normal. PIN code and coordinates become especially valuable for deliveries where no formal street address exists. DIGIPIN was designed partly for this gap in the addressing system.
In new townships and SEZs, roads may not yet appear on all maps. If the geocoded text looks incomplete, rely on coordinates and DIGIPIN plus your own description of the project name and gate number.
Using PIN code, address, and DIGIPIN together
| Field | Example | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Postal address | Locality, city, Karnataka 560066 | Forms, letters, human-readable contact |
| 6-digit PIN code | 560066 | India Post sorting, bank KYC, government pincode fields |
| DIGIPIN | 4P3-3JT-398J | Deliveries, maps, sharing exact spot on WhatsApp |
| Lat / Lon | 12.971600, 77.594600 | Navigation apps, technical records, emergency |
None of these alone is a complete delivery instruction. The best practice is to combine readable address text, PIN code, flat or house number, landmark, and DIGIPIN in delivery notes. For a deeper comparison, read DIGIPIN vs PIN Code or our blog comparison.
